Description
The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) is a medium-sized songbird measuring about 7.75 inches in length and about 1.0 ounces in weight. It has a long, thick bill, variable colorful plumage, and a slight crest. Adult males are mostly red, but females are variable and can be pale gray, orange-red, or blotchy with orange tinged feathers. The plumage colorations are somewhat dependent on diet. Summer Tanagers typically forage for insects (bees and wasps) high in trees, and also eat berries. They breed in oak woods in the southern United States extending as far north as Iowa. Summer Tanagers winter in Mexico, Central America and northern parts of South America.
This solitary Summer Tanager (orange adult female) perched on a rock overlooking a pool of water was photographed in Tower Grove Park, St. Louis, Missouri, on 5-18-2017; the pool is located in the Robert and Martha Gaddy Wild Bird Garden. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4 vr2 lens to capture this image.
