Description
The Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) is a large wren, measuring about 8.5 inches in length and about 1.4 ounces in weight. It is an inquisitive, noisy, brash bird with very distinctively patterned, and beautiful, plumage. It is native to southwestern United States down to central Mexico, and prefers habitat in arid regions around saguaro, yucca and mesquite. The Cactus Wren typically nests in or on cactus plants. It's diet is mostly insects, and occasionally fruit, seeds, reptiles and frogs. The Cactus Wren is the Arizona State Bird.
This Cactus Wren standing on a large Giant Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) cactus as though it is impervious to the spines was photographed in Tucson Mountain Park, near Tucson, Arizona, on 11-4-2016. This park was established by Pima County in 1929 and is comprised of 20,000 acres. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/320, f/6.3, ISO 200.
I am honored that my photograph was featured by the Fine Art America groups:
