Artist's Description

The Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister), a member of the family Iguanidae, is a conspicuous lizard in the western and southwestern desert (in Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexica, Nevada, and Utah). It measures about 5.6 inches in length with spine-tipped scales, and a conspicuous black mark on both sides of its neck; adult males usually have a purple (or blue-violet) patch on the anterior back. This species feeds mostly on insects. The colors it displays may change as a function of temperature.

This Desert Spiny Lizard male was photographed at the Tonaquint Nature Center in St. George, Utah on 6-25-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 2500.

I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
Animal Photographs, 10-19-2021
Our 4-Legged Friends, 10-24-2021
Nikon Full Frame Cameras, 3-22-2022

About Morris Finkelstein

Morris Finkelstein

Thank you for your interest in my photographs. My passion for birding and nature has taken me outdoors almost daily whether home in the USA, or on trips in East Africa, Israel, the Caribbean, and Brazil. I've been fortunate enough to have seen and photographed over 1000 species of birds, and I get a lot of satisfaction when I'm able to capture a beautiful and interesting shot and share it with others. I've had the honor of my bird photos recognized in prestigious competitions including "The Top One Hundred" of the Audubon Photo Contest, the "Honored Top 40" of the Nature's Best Backyards Photography Contest, and included in the "Nature's Witness" exhibition of 47 nature photographs (selected from 22,000 entries to the National Wildlife...
