Description
The Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister), a member of the family Iguanidae, is a conspicuous lizard in the western and southwestern desert (in Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexica, Nevada, and Utah). It measures about 5.6 inches in length with spine-tipped scales, and a conspicuous black mark on both sides of its neck; adult males usually have a purple (or blue-violet) patch on the anterior back. This species feeds mostly on insects. The colors it displays may change as a function of temperature.
This Desert Spiny Lizard male was photographed at the Tonaquint Nature Center in St. George, Utah on 6-25-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 2500.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
