Description
The Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), a member of the family Tyrannidae, is an uncommon flycatcher that is found in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, mostly in open areas near water. They forage insects either in the air or on the ground from a low perch and are conspicuous. Their heads are peaked, and their body is dark except for a whitish abdomen. Juvenile plumage is browner with a cinnamon rump and two cinnamon wing bars. Black Phoebes measure about 7 inches in length and about 0.67 ounces in weight.
This juvenile Black Phoebe perched on a branch while foraging was photographed at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, in Arcadia, California on 7-7-2023. I used a Nikon Z9 camera body and a Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/6.3, ISO 2000. The Arboretum covers about 127 acres of land. It is interesting to note that scenes from many movies and television shows were shot on the Arboretum grounds.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
