Description
Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), also called "African Buffalo", are large and powerful cattle-like animals with large heads and massive horns. The horn's have a fused base, and form a bony shield for the animal's head. Cape Buffalo are found in dense forests, open plains, grasslands, and woodlands. They stay near water, as they generally drink water every day. The average size of a herd is between 20 and 40 animals. While their eyesight and hearing are not very sensitive, their sense of smell is very well developed. They are relatively unpredictable and dangerous to humans, killing about 200 people each year, earning the names "Black Death" and "Widowmaker". They are huge animals, measuring between 6 and 12 feet in length, and about 1100 to 2200 pounds in weight. They have few predators other than humans, and are usually able to defend themselves against attacks by individual Lions.
This Cape Buffalo watching me was photographed in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania on 1-15-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR telephoto lens to capture this portrait image. Settings: 1/320 sec, f/5.6, ISO 320.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
