Description
The Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa), a member of the family Nymphalidae, known in Britain as Camberwell Beauty, is a large butterfly native to North America and Eurasia found predominantly in hardwood forests, with cold climates. They can have wingspans of up to 4 inches. The dorsal sides of the wings are dark maroon or brown, with pale yellow edges, and powder blue spots on the outside edges of the maroon coloration. The ventral sides of the wings are black, looking like charred wood. They are seen throughout the year as they are non-migratory. Preferred food of the adult Mourning Cloaks is sap, fermenting fruit, and flower nectar. Preferred plant hosts for larvae are willows, poplars, and elms. Like many butterflies, they extract salt and nutrients from mud puddles and animal droppings. These butterflies have one of the longest life spans of any butterflies, being about 12 months. The State of Montana has designated Mourning Cloak as the official State Insect.
This Mourning Cloak perched on a leafy plant was photographed at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, in Los Angeles, California on 6-27-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/2000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 2500.
