Description
The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is a large dabbling duck in the family Anatidae, and one of the most common duck species found throughout the United States, and in much of the world. Male Mallards have green heads, gray on their wings and bellies, while female Mallards have brown plumage. Both sexes have blue wing patches. Mallards may be found in ponds and parks, or in any wet habitat containing aquatic vegetation. They measure about 23 inches in length and about 2.4 pounds in weight. Preferred diet includes invertebrates, gastropods, and plant matter.
This female Mallard (hen) swimming in front of her six ducklings was photographed at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, in Los Angeles, California on 6-26-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/8.0, ISO 1100.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
