Description
The European Honey Bee (Apis mellifera), a member of the family Apidae. also known as Western Honey Bee, naturally exists in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It's 8 recognized subspecies have been introduced on all continents except Antarctica, for economic reasons related to honey production and pollination. It is estimated that Bees pollinate about 30% of the food that people eat. The biology, communication, and social interactions of Honey Bees have been very extensively studied. The State of Utah is the Beehive State!
Wild roses are usually members of the Family Rosaceae. A common species seen with red and white flowers blooming in June is Rugosa Rose (R. rugosa). Bushes may be found in meadows, woodlands, hillsides, and along roads. The flowers are about two inches across, have five petals, bright yellow stamens, and bloom in the spring. The blossoms attract a wide variety of pollinators including bumble bees, honeybees, beetles, and flies.
This Honey Bee in flight to forage on a wild rose was photographed in the morning at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, in Los Angeles, California, on 6-27-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6 PF VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/6.3, ISO 800. Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles was initially created in 1979 as a natural habitat for birds, small animals, and native plants and covered 48-acres; subsequent development of the Reserve resulted in expansion to include 225-acres. Much of the park was devastated by a fire on September 15, 2020, with destruction of about 70% of the plant life. Since then, living roots have resprouted to create new shrubs, some established trees have survived, and some birds, animals, and insects survived. It unfortunately will take much effort, resources, and time to be the natural habitat that it was previously.
