Description
Wild roses are usually members of the Family Rosaceae. A common species seen with red and white flowers blooming in June is the Rugosa Rose (R. rugosa). Bushes may be found in meadows, woodlands, hillsides, and along roads. The flowers are about two inches across, have five petals, bright yellow stamens, and bloom in the spring. The blossoms attract a wide variety of pollinators including bumble bees, honey bees, beetles, and flies.
The Common Eastern Bumble Bee (Bombus impatiens) is widespread in much of the eastern United States and Canada. Preferred habitat is in temperate forest regions with an abundance of plant nectar sources. The Common Eastern Bumble Bee has a large variety of about 100 plant species from which to forage pollen and nectar. This species nests underground in woods and open fields. They are efficient pollinators which play an important role in crop production for humans, particularly since the decline in the populations of other bees. The biggest threat to this species and most other Bumble Bee species is loss of preferred grasslands habitat.
This Common Eastern Bumble Bee on a Climbing Rose (Rosa setigera) was photographed at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area, in St. Charles County, Missouri on 6-16-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 600mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 1250. The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area was acquired by the State of Missouri from the federal government in the late 1940's. This 7000-acre area was used during World War 2 for production and storage of TNT and DNT, and during the 1960's for the processing of Uranium ore. Subsequently, the large property was thoroughly decontaminated, and then used as a wildlife conservation area.
