Description
The Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa) is comprised of over 500 species found worldwide; in Utah the species seen are X. californica and X. tabaniformis. They tend to be solitary insects that live in tunnels with their relatives. They make nests in wood, preferably weathered wood. They are mostly black and measure about an inch in length.
The orange-red wildflowers resembles photos of Trumpet Vine flowers (Campsis radicans), also called Trumpet Creeper, with orange-red and scarlet trumpet-shaped blooms growing in clusters that flower throughout the summer. This plant is a member of the family Bigoniaceae that is native to the eastern United States. The vigorous, woody vines may grow 40 feet in length at maturity. The flowers are known to attract hummingbirds.
This Carpenter Bee foraging on a Trumpet Vine flower was photographed at the Tonaquint Nature Center in St. George, Utah on 6-25-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/6.3, ISO 1400.
