Description
The Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) is a sea bird found on any open water, often in a flock. They are widely distributed across North America. They are large and stocky birds, measuring about 33 inches in length and about 5 pounds in weight. They are all-black birds with orange bills and lores, and aqua green eyes. They feed mostly on fish, which they hunt while swimming and diving. The juvenile birds have dark gray or brown plumage, with a pale throat and breast, as well as a yellow bill. When breeding, the adults build stick nests in trees or on cliffs along coastal areas.
This 'swim' of seven Double-Crested Cormorants was photographed at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, in Los Angeles, California on 6-28-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/1600 sec, f/9.0, ISO 2500.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
